Instabilities in turbulent boundary layers

چکیده

An investigation of a model of turbulence generation in the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer is made through direct numerical simulations. The model is based on the instability of a streak. First, a laminar boundary layer disturbed by a continuous blowing through a slot is simulated in order to reproduce and further investigate the results reported from the experiments of Acarlar & Smith (1987). An isolated streak with an inflectional profile is generated that becomes unstable, resulting in a train of horseshoe vortices. The frequency of the vortex generation is equal to the experimental results. Comparison of the instability characteristics to those predicted through an Orr-Sommerfeld analysis are in good agreement. Second, a direct numerical simulation of a turbulent boundary layer is performed to point out the similarities between the horseshoe vortices in a turbulent and a laminar boundary layer. The characteristics of streaks and the vortical structures surrounding them in a turbulent boundary layer compare well with the model streak. The results of the present study suggest that the primary mechanism for the generation of horseshoe vortices in turbulent boundary layers is related to an inflectional instability of the streaks.

Sidewall boundary layer instabilities in a rapidly rotating cylinder driven by a differentially corotating lid

The flow in an enclosed completely filled rapidly rotating cylinder that is driven by the differential corotation of the top lid is studied numerically. Although the flow is in a very simple geometry, the fast background rotation and large differential rotation of the lid lead to very thin boundary layers with a variety of instability modes with very fine spatial scales as well as inertial wave...

Aerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy

The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...

Large-scale instabilities in a nonrotating turbulent convection

A theoretical approach proposed by Elperin et al. Phys. Rev. E 66, 066305 2002 is developed further to investigate formation of large-scale coherent structures in a nonrotating turbulent convection via excitation of a large-scale instability. In particular, the convective-wind instability that causes formation of large-scale coherent motions in the form of cells, can be excited in a shear-free ...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Sidewall boundary layer instabilities in confined swirling flow †

We examine enclosed swirling transitional and turbulent flows in a cylindrical vessel, driven by a single rotating endwall. The cylinder height:radius ratio H/R = 1 was chosen explicitly to preclude the possibility of vortex breakdown on the cylinder axis, thus concentrating attention on the behaviour of the cylindrical sidewall boundary layers. Over a range of Reynolds numbers above Re = ΩR2/ν...
